Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Lake Charles LA
510 PM CST Sun Feb 22 2026

...New AVIATION...

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Low relative humidity and gusty northerly winds along with
  underlying dry fuels will cause the fire danger to increase
  today and Monday, especially across the southern and central
  parishes of Louisiana.

- A Canadian air mass will settle into the region, bringing much
  cooler conditions with the potential for a light freeze Monday
  night into Tuesday morning.

- Much warmer conditions return from the middle of the next work
  week into the rest of the long term.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Tuesday night)
Issued at 1229 PM CST Sun Feb 22 2026

Current conditions are in the 50s across much of the CWA,
accompanied by elevated and gusty northerly flow under sunny
skies. Surface high pressure continues to build southward from the
central and southern Plains, ushering in a cooler and
significantly drier continental airmass.

Temperatures today and Monday will struggle to rise beyond the
lower 60s, with both overnight periods expected to be notably
cold. Lows tonight will range from the lower 30s to upper 30s.
Latest NBM guidance indicates a 10 to 40 percent probability of
subfreezing temperatures north of the I-10 corridor, particularly
across central Louisiana, with lower but non zero probabilities
extending into portions of Acadiana and the Atchafalaya Basin.
Conditions will be colder Monday night, with probabilities for
subfreezing temperatures increasing to 20 to 90 percent across the
same areas.

A warming trend will begin Tuesday as a surface high pressure
shifts east of the CWA and southerly flow becomes established,
marking the transition into the long term period.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday through next Saturday)
Issued at 1229 PM CST Sun Feb 22 2026

By midweek, southerly flow will be established and gradually
strengthening as the surface pressure gradient tightens between
high pressure over FL and a developing low over the Southern
Plains near the TX Panhandle. As a result, winds are expected to
become elevated and gusty, and a Wind Advisory may be required.

Warm and moisture rich Gulf air will advect into the region,
supporting a steady increase in both temperatures and dewpoints.
Afternoon highs will rise into the mid 70s to lower 80s by
midweek, while overnight lows moderate into the 60s by early
Thursday morning. The next opportunity for scattered showers will
occur late Thursday into early Friday as a weak frontal boundary
approaches the area. Increased cloud cover and precipitation will
briefly limit daytime temperatures to the mid 70s on Friday;
however, this cooling will be short lived as warmer conditions
return over the weekend.

&&

.AVIATION...
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 508 PM CST Sun Feb 22 2026

TAFs are purely a wind forecast through the next 24 hours as clear
skies prevail. Gusty north winds will finally begin to relax over
the next few hours, remaining around 8-10kts through the rest of
the overnight period and throughout tomorrow. Tomorrow afternoon,
occasional gusts will be possible at the Acadiana terminals but
the pressure gradient should be light enough elsewhere to keep
gusty winds in check.
